The sixteenth-century, convent of St. Francis, majestic and beautifully restored, stands in the ancient centre of the village of  Irsina (20 km from Matera). Once  home to Franciscan monks, today it functions as a polyvalent centre, fully equipped to offer a multi-faceted array of activities and cultural initiatives, ranging from art to gastronomy to business seminars and incentives. Fully managed by the Arenacea Cooperative, the building is now used as a means to promote the rich archaeological history and art originating from the ancient city of Montepeloso (now  called Irsina).

The convent is located in the very heart of the historical centre, behind the castle Norman-Swabian, surrounded by breathtaking panoramic views of idyllic landscapes. The great central gallery and the ancient cloister are bright and luminous and make the Franciscan convent the ideal place to organise all manner of events, conferences, business seminars, concerts, cinema reviews, private parties, marriages, etc.

The convent also houses the Archaeological "Michele Janora" Museum that boasts of a collection of around 1770 finds of various historical epochs ranging from prehistoric to the Greeks, the Romans and up through the Middle Ages until the 8th century.

Apart from catering to cultural and business events, Arenacea also organises guided discovery tours around the village of Irsina to visit the many churches, ancient buildings and works of art, frescoes, and other historical treasures.

For those wishing to visit or stay in Irisna, Arenacea provides an alternative to a hotel or bed-and-breakfast, with the possibility to reside in the residences of the historical centre. The convent also provides a restaurant service and has it’s own wine bar that specialises in providing tantalising local dishes.

Arenacea also offers an internet point with high-speed adsl and wi-fi for it’s clients.
